Blue Dons participate in Weirton’s Youth Council
Madonna is well-represented at the inaugural City of Weirton Youth Council program. Throughout this year, Blue Dons Ender Jones, Gianna Bonovich, Jordan Kondik, Nathan Brady, and Violetta Turianyn will participate in community service projects, observe city council meetings, voice youth-related concerns, discuss community issues, and develop their leadership skills through hands-on learning experiences. 2025-26 Judicial Scholars

On April 7th, Anthony Mascio represented Madonna in the OVAC All-Star Game. Coach George Vargo coached alongside David Tallman from Morgantown High School in a West Virginia win over Ohio. In addition, Mr. Philip Rujak was given the Bob Burton Distinguished Service Award for his countless hours and dedication towards Ohio Valley Basketball during his coaching career.

Jr. Dons Go Undefeated
The Jr. Dons football team has achieved an undefeated record in 2023! The team finished 7-0 and also won the City Championship during their run. Grishkevich to Represent the USA at Goodwill Games
Koleton Grishkevich, Madonna High School Junior, will represent the USA and will travel to Barcelona, Spain in August to compete in the 2024 Goodwill Games. Class of 1972 Holds 50th Reunion
The Class of 1972 held their 50th Reunion in September. Their reunion was down at Oglebay Park. Monsignor Joe Peterson celebrated a memorial mass for the deceased classmates, teachers, and staff members. Five teachers were able to attend as well: Rich Mahoney, Sr. Gail. Goodwill Drive to Victory
Madonna High School and Steubenville Central Catholic will go head-to-head in the Goodwill Drive to Victory from September 19-23. Madonna Students Attend Girls State
Rhododendron Girls State started in 1941 under the sponsorship and direction of the American Legion Auxiliary Department of West Virginia. Boys Basketball Wins Regional Title, Advances to State Tournament
The Madonna boys basketball team won the Regional Championship beating Clay-Battelle 66-56 on March 9th. They move on the to State Tournament in Charleston. The Blue Dons will play James Monroe on Tuesday, March 15th at 5:30pm in a quarterfinal matchup.

Boys Basketball Wins Sectional Title
On Friday, March 4th Madonna made the trip down to Cameron to play for the Region I Section I championship. This year, Cameron had come out on top in the 3 previous match ups. The Blue Dons were up to the challenge on Friday and won 44-43 to claim the Sectional Title! They will now play Clay-Battelle Wednesday, March 9th in the Dube Dome for the Regional Championship.

Arlia and Quering Land on Stat Leader Lists
Santino Arlia ended the 2021 season with 2,175 passing yards which was 8th overall and was 4th with 29 passing touchdowns. He averaged 241.7 yards a game which was 1st in Class A. Evan Quering was 8th with 935 receiving yards and 5th with 13 receiving touchdowns. He averaged 103.9 receiving yards per game which was 1st in Class A.

Giving Tuesday Update
On Tuesday, November 30th, Madonna High School participated in Giving Tuesday. This year we set a goal to raise $2,000 to help purchase new equipment for our Science classrooms. Our Madonna Family met and surpassed our goal by gifting $3,500! Within the next few weeks the new items will be purchased and we will share pictures once they arrive. Thank you to all who donated!

Senior Santino Arlia was named the Herald Star/Weirton Daily Times Offensive Player of the Year! Santino was a unanimous choice, receiving all three first place votes and nine of a possible nine points. He holds every passing record, single game, season and career. Conti Retires After Storied Tenure
Coach Cris Conti recently announced his retirement from coaching the Madonna Softball Team. Coach Conti graduated from Madonna in 1976, but never really left. Rose Ferrelli McMurray ‘68, was a recent recipient of the Marion Martin Award from the National Safety Council. This award is given out annually to outstanding female safety professionals. Rose is the chief transportation safety advisor for FDR Safety, LLC where she provides consulting services to those in the transportation sector, expert witness services, and teaches safety management at the graduate student level. Class of ’68 Celebrates

Madonna Helps Those In Need
Madonna High School recently held two collections to help others in need. The Pro-Life Club collected diapers, baby wipes, shampoo, and other baby items. This was to help the Gabriel Project and went along with the Novena for Life that was said during the school day. Three Madonna Alumni Named to WV Class A 2000s All-Decade Team
Congratulations to Connor Arlia, Lou Comis, and Max Nogay, who were recognized as members of the WV Class A 2000s All-Decade Team by Coalfields & Co. Giving Tuesday Update
On December 1, 2020, Madonna High School participated in Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving. Funds donated on this day were set aside to help with security upgrades. Madonna Students Help Urban Mission
During Catholic Schools Week, Madonna students gathered blankets, pillows, coloring/activity books, and crayons/markers. Today, Madonna students delivered 41 bags to Urban Mission in Steubenville where children in crisis will be given the bags filled with these items. Lindsey Wheat, Rylie Cottrill, Kristina Lesho, Mia Pietranton, and Sydney Crawford presented the bags to Kelly Jeffers, Director of New Initiatives, and Tiffany Beckwith, Community Engagement Director, from Urban Mission.

Lady Dons Soccer Players Earn All-State Accolades
Three Lady Dons soccer players were named to the West Virginia Sports Writers Assocication's AA-A Girls Soccer All-State Team. Angelina Spickard earned 1st Team honors for her efforts in the 2020 fall season. Sofia-Teresa DiBacco and Isabella Pulice were Honorable Mentions. Congratulations ladies!

Successful Madonna CARE-avan
On Sunday, December 20, 2020, Madonna High School held a CARE-avan. Students, alumni, family members, and Madonna staff drove through Serra Village in Weirton with signs and decorated cars to help spread some holiday cheer. Macek named to OVAC All-Star Soccer Team
Senior goalkeeper, Abby Macek, is Madonna's representative in the OVAC All-Star Game. This game has been cancelled for now due to COVID19, but hopefully will be rescheduled for a later date. Congratulations Abby on a great soccer career at Madonna!
Realizing a need for Catholic secondary education in Weirton, Monsignor Daniel Patrick Murphy began formulating plans early in the 1950’s for the building of a high school. After receiving the approval of Archbishop Swint of the Wheeling diocese, Msgr. Murphy and a group of interested parishioners began a fund raising campaign of one million dollars. Weirton Steel Company and many generous individuals made large contributions. Catholic employees pledged three percent of their wages for three years. Mr. and Mrs. Starvaggi donated twelve acres of land for the school plan.
As the dream was about to become a reality, Msgr. Daniel Patrick Murphy met a sister from the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Peace while on a trip to Ireland. Sister Pauline brought interest in this new school to her superiors in Newark, New Jersey. They accepted the offer to staff a Catholic school in West Virginia.
Msgr. Thomas McDonnell, co-adjuster of the Wheeling Diocese, dedicated Madonna High School on August 15, 1955. Msgr. Murphy, who was suffering from terminal cancer, was flown to the ceremonies from New York. He died on September 19, 1955, after his educational dream had come true.
